#Repost @rinzence with @repostapp ・・・ @project_quilt: I hadn’t heard of Jeri Ellsworth until she appeared on the “life well wasted” podcast in 2009/ 2010. She was talking about DIY technology, something that had always interested me but I’d never properly pursued. I started trying to learn more about that scene and would watch her youtube videos obsessively. My dad’s an engineer so I grew up with it in the background. I have strong memories of talking to him by exposed circuitry or quizzing him about what it is he does at work, but it always seemed so out of reach. Maybe in the same way you’d never think you could be a teacher as a child. This interview with Jeri Ellsworth was the first time I realised that it was something I could pursue. Until that point I’d always thought I’d have to be a different type of person to become that type of engineer. Jeri Ellsworth was not only extremely intelligent, she was cool and kind of punk (check her “horn box” story in the aforementioned podcast). More than anything though, she was self taught! A self taught computer chip designer, no less! My ambitions were a little lower at this point but nevertheless, i signed up for a degree in computer science, in part due to Jeri Ellsworth. She made me want to use my time more effectively. She made me want to understand everything. She made me realise that this thing i was interested in didn’t have to go against my personality. I grew up in a town where you learned, specifically to have a career. Jeri Ellsworth taught me that you can learn because you just want to know. #JeriEllsworth
